Would You Believe…

Life in the Philippines never ceases to amaze me.  Most people are aware of the cost-of-living difference, but I thought this continuing list of  prices, along with some random “fun facts” thrown in, would be entertaining:

… a case of beer can be delivered to your house for P300 (less than $7.00 USD)

… monthly Internet access costs only P999 (less than $22.00 USD); cable TV is about P350/month (approx. $7.95 USD)

… a trike to downtown costs P8 (approximately 0.20 cents)

… a brand-new motorcycle can be purchased for as little as P70,000 (less than $1,600 USD); a smaller, “moped” for P30,000 (under $700 USD)

… a pack of Marlboro costs P40 (less than $1.00 USD)

… a live-in maid (or “Helper” as they are more commonly referred to here) can be hired for P2,500/month (less than $60 USD)

… it’s 80 degrees on Christmas Day

… you can buy a DVD of a still-in-the-theatre movie for P60 (less than $1.50 USD); a TV series Season DVD is a little more, lol

… a kilo (2.2 lbs) of fresh chicken breast sells for around P200 ($4.50 USD)

… we had Bermuda grass delivered and “installed” in our front yard, along with eight rosebushes, for a total of P4,200 ($95.00 USD)

… home delivery of a 20-litre (5.28 gallons) jug of water is only $0.79 cents… you can’t buy a 12-oz. bottle of water at 7-11 for that, can you?

… a Filipina friend of mine went downtown yesterday and opened a bank account at BDO (Banco de Oro) — the required, minimum balance is P200 (less than $5.00 USD) per month to avoid service charges
